Storm water runoff from the City streets in the lower part of Trinidad, the harbor parking lot, and the HSU Marine Lab flow into Trinidad Bay without being treated. Bacteria, metals and other pollutants in untreated storm water runoff threaten water quality and public health. 
The State Water Board’s Storm Water Grant Program recently recommended for funding a pair of grant proposals that together will treat the storm water and eliminate discharges into Trinidad Head Area of Special Biological Significance using nature based solutions. The Cher-Ae Heights Indian Community of the Trinidad Rancheria and the City of Trinidad worked cooperatively to develop the successful proposals to construct green infrastructure (also known as Low Impact Development or LID) to protect Trinidad Bay water quality.
